WHS grad to perform on national radio broadcast

Shelby NugentFrench horn player Shelby Nugent of Waterloo will appear on a national broadcast of “From the Top” on NPR, a showcase for America’s best young classical musicians hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. The episode will air locally on St. Louis Public Radio (90.7FM) on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.

A 2012 graduate of Waterloo High School, Nugent is a recent alumna of the Preparatory Program of the Community Music School at Webster University. She is currently a freshman at Northwestern University, where she is studying music performance.

Broadcast on more than 200 stations nationwide to an audience of nearly 700,000 listeners each week, “From the Top” has been described by the Boston Globe as “an entertaining, accessible and inspirational mix of outstanding musical performances, informal interviews, skits and games; the show is a celebration of extraordinary musicians who happen to be teenagers leading fairly normal lives.” Learn more at www.fromthetop.org.

Nugent recently won second place at the International Horn Society Premier Soloist Competition in Denton, Texas. She was one of five finalists that competed at the international competition in May. Nugent performed “Movement I: Massig beweg” from the Sonata for Horn and Piano by Paul Hindemith on “From the Top.” The Community Music School’s Preparatory Program is for gifted high school music students who anticipate pursuing a career in music.
