The Waterloo boys golf team “has not faired well” in its big tournaments so far this season according to Coach Nancy Neal who holds her team to a high standard. And rightfully so, with its recent history of success.

But bulldog seniors John Wirth and Charles Hawn, along with Clayton Stoker have given the bulldogs a boost so far this season.

Tuesday, Waterloo played in the U-High Invitational with senior John Wirth finishing tied for second with a 72. Charles Hawn, sr., tied for 12th, carding a 75 at his older brother, Wils Hawn’s, home course at Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club.

“It went pretty well, I started off a little rough but I came back on the back nine,” said Hawn who also got his first eagle of the season at the tournament. “I drove a par 4 and made a 30 footer, and that’s what got my round going on the back.”

Previously, the bulldogs took their first two matches against Belleville West (164-161) and Jerseyville (170-156). Charles Hawn medaled with a 36 against the Maroons. Stoker medaled with a score of 38.

To lead off the season, Wirth placed second at the Quincy Invitational with a 71 and tied for fourth at the Alton Invitational with a 74, alongside Hawn, who scored a 77 to tie for 15th.
