The Waterloo High School boys golf team enters the season with high hopes.

Waterloo will be returning three seniors, who are hoping to lead the Bulldogs back to the state playoffs for the second time in three years.

Johnny Wirth, Charles Hawn and Clayton Stoeker were sophomores when the Bulldogs advanced to state two years ago.

Wirth and Hawn are expected to be two of the better golfers in the area this fall.

Wirth, who finished tied for sixth at state in 2010, said he needs to get his confidence back.

He said his summer didn’t go as well as he would have liked.

But Wirth likes the make up of this year’s team.

He, however, believes his team needs to find a fourth scorer behind himself, Hawn and Stoeker.

Wirth recently played in the Junior Optimist International Tournament in Florida, missing the cut.

“I wouldn’t say I played good or bad in the tournament,” he said. “I just played average. I  shot 77, 78 and 76. While they are okay scores, they are not what I like or hoped to shoot.”

Wirth does not know if the Bulldogs will be good enough to compete at state this season.

“But that’s also what I thought my sophomore year, and we did make state,” he said.

“There is no pressure on this year.”

Like Wirth, Hawn believes his team might have a good year if they find a fourth scorer.

He said that fourth scorer might be Clayton Augustine or Joey Mercer.

“I had a pretty good summer,” said Hawn, who finished second at the Annbriar Classic shooting a 148.
