‘Dogs, Eagles get different results at sectional

The Waterloo and Columbia boys soccer teams had different results in their first games of sectional play Tuesday night at Columbia High School. The Bulldogs season will continue, while the Eagles season has come to a close.

In the first match of the night, the ‘Dogs defeated Quincy Notre Dame, 3-2. It wasn’t an easy task, although it did start off like most Waterloo soccer matches this season.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Ben Huels scored the first goal of the game and Kane Osterhage added another.

But Quincy Notre Dame tied things up quickly in the second half. With 30 minutes remaining, the game was knotted up at 2-2.

The ‘Dogs weren’t done, though. For his second goal of the game, Huels blasted in a cross from Tyler Grob with 14 minutes left to play. The lead would hold and the Bulldogs now play on Friday at 6 p.m. They will take on Alton Marquette, who took down host team Columbia in the nightcap, 2-1.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half. Columbia’s best chance came on a free kick awarded just outside the box.

Columbia’s Cameron Roth was pulled down by a Marquette defender. It led to a free kick attempt by Sean Rickey, who got a nice shot off. But the goaltender was able to get a handle on it.

In the second half, Marquette struck first. They scored and took the lead with 32 minutes left in the game. Roth answered for the Eagles and it was tied 1-1. However, another goal from Marquette would be enough for the upset win.

Columbia finished the year at 22-2-1 and as Cahokia Conference champs.

The winner of Waterloo vs. Marquette advances to the IHSA Class 2A Super Sectional, with a chance to go to state.
