Waterloo High School bowling standouts Mike McGarry and Hayden Bode are bowling in the Junior Gold Championship this week in Buffalo, New York.

First round action got underway Monday.

The Junior Gold Championships is an annual national tournament for the top male and female youth bowlers in the country. The tournament awards scholarships and youth bowlers competing in the U20 and U15 divisions also have the opportunity to earn a spot on Junior Team USA.

The tournament has six divisions – U12 Boys, U12 Girls, U15 Boys, U15 Girls, U20 Boys and U20 Girls.

Making the first cut to the advancers round is projected to be 154 bowlers in the U20 boys division, in which McGarry and Bode are competing.

The final advancers round will feature 64 in U20 boys.

The fields will eventually narrow to the final 16 in the U20 and U15 divisions and the final eight in the U12 divisions for the double-elimination match-play bracket.

Winners will be determined Friday afternoon.

BOWL.com’s BowlTV will have live streaming of the event starting July 16 at 6 p.m. and continuing until the champions are crowned the afternoon of July 18.
