The Valmeyer High School volleyball team defeated Steeleville, 21-23, 21-18 and 15-4, to tie for first place in pool play at the Marissa/New Athens Invitational on Thursday night.

The Pirates won two of three matches at the tournament this week, tying with Wesclin and Pickneyville for first place. But it wasn’t enough for coach Jenny Kohnz’s team, who lost the tie-breaker to Wesclin by four points.

The Pirates were then knocked out of second place with a head-to-head ruling against Pickneyville, who defeated Valmeyer on Tuesday night in a heart-breaking three games, 21-8, 19-21 and 12-15.

“This knocked us out of advancing to the next round, even though we beat the first place team,” explained Valmeyer assistant coach Karla Bivins.

The disappointing three-way tie results didn’t take away from the Pirates’ performance on Thursday night.

Sophomore Miranda Kaufmann lead the team in assists with 22. Senior Andi Inman led the way for the Pirates in kills with 14 and 12 digs. Fellow classmate Paige Whipple dominated game three from the serving line against Steeleville with 14 points and five aces. Sophomore Tiffani Brewer also had three blocks.
