The Valmeyer High School girls cross country team is this week’s Republic-Times Team of the Week.

The Pirates made school history before the fall season even started, with it being the first year the school has had enough runners for both girls and boys cross country teams.

“Five of my seven girls play volleyball and three of my six boys play soccer, so they have to be dedicated to more than one sport,” Valmeyer cross country coach Amber Stewart explained. “However, it doesn’t show one bit.  Each and every one put in just as much effort and are always asking for a challenge.”

Over the weekend, the program etched itself into the history books once again, with the girls advancing to sectionals for the first time ever as a team.

“I think that many didn’t expect to see Valmeyer cross country on their radar this year, but after several races, people and other coaches started to notice us,” Stewart said. “We are definitely a team to look out for.”

The Pirates took home fourth place in the Class 1A regional in Chester, with two runners finishing in the top 10. Valmeyer sophomore Morgan Redohl led the team, finishing with a time of 20:11, taking home sixth place, while teammate Emilee Mosbacher finished in eight place with a time of 21:05.

“This is is very special for my senior, Emilee Mosbacher, who was brought to tears when it was announced at regionals that the “team” was all advancing.  She was one of the three that started running last year for Valmeyer and she wants to make her senior year as special as possible,” Stewart said.

Other participating runners include, Helen Weber, Kenzi Redohl, Hannah Weber, Daria Wilson and Hailey Weber.

Valmeyer will compete in the Edwardsville Class 1A Sectional at Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, this Saturday.

Congratulations Pirates, good luck in the post-season!
