Mt. Pulaski stepped onto Doug Collins Court at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal for the IHSA Class 1A state volleyball semifinals like they had been there before. And they have.

The Hilltoppers (33-8), last year’s state runner-up with every player from last season’s roster returning to state this year, defeated the first-time state qualifying Valmeyer Pirates, 25-8, 25-16, on Friday morning.

Mt. Pulaski held the Pirates to just one total team block, and forced 15 Pirate errors to the Toppers’ eight.

A large Valmeyer fan section cheered on their team, and it appeared the players had calmed their nerves in the second game. The Pirates were ahead until the Toppers took the lead at 10-9. From there on, the game was a back-and-forth battle until Mt. Pulaski forced the Pirates to take a timeout with the score at 17-14. They pulled away for the remaining part of the match, allowing the Pirates to score only two more points the rest of the game.

Valmeyer’s Morgan Redohl led both teams with six digs on the day, while Paige Whipple charted five kills and Andi Inman had four.

The Pirates will compete for third place on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Kansas Tri-County (35-3).
