Theft reported in Millstadt

The Millstadt Police Department reported Tuesday that money was stolen from a lost wallet near Dollar General in the 500 block of West Washington Street shortly before 1 p.m.

The wallet, which belonged to an elderly female, had a large sum of cash missing when found and returned to its owner, police said.

“Further investigation revealed two juveniles, who had been riding their bikes in the area, observed a subject picking money up off the ground. The suspect was not the same as the individual who turned in the wallet,” Millstadt police said.

Witnesses described the suspect as a hispanic male wearing jeans and a yellow shirt. He was possibly driving a white work van with a ladder rack. Police said the money was near the wallet when stolen.

“A reasonable person would believe the money went with the wallet and the owner could be identified,” Millstadt police said.

The victim had placed the wallet and other items on the trunk of her car while parked at Mariachi’s Restaurant.

“The female was very upset, and we want to help recover the money. Anyone who observed any activity matching this should call the police department, at 476-7250,” Millstadt police said.
