NHRA Midwest Nationals

Gateway Motorsports Raceway was home once again to the National Hot Rod Association – AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals the weekend of September 26-28th. Many improvements to the grounds, facilities, the organized management of the event, staff and vendors was more than evident this year – it was refreshing. Curtis Francois has transformed this annual festival of motorcycles, cars, trucks and even a “school bus” into a fan-friendly, participant desired venue. To hear drivers express their “love for St. Louis” [Gateway], is music to the media and track owners alike.

On Thursday, while picking up credentials, I overheard one of the track office personnel comment that all vendor spots were taken. Upon arrival to the track on Friday, all vendors were in place and open to the public. It is this accessibility to manufacturers, suppliers, driver souvenirs and the race teams that make NHRA so successful. Fan participation and family atmosphere is a primary component to the overall experience and Francois hit the mark this year. In the years prior to Curtis Francois’ ownership, organization, cleanliness and courteous track volunteers was lacking; evidenced by the loss of NASCAR and NHRA events. It has been said the St. Louis Metro Area has the best sports fans in the country and when the venue meets and exceeds their expectations, everyone wins.

And winners there were; not only in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, but also the NHRA Pro Mod Series, and the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League. Class finalists included: Top Fuel – Antron Brown; Fuel Funny Car – Courtney Force; Pro Stock – Dave Connolly; Pro Stock Motorcycle – Jerry Savoie and Pro Modified – Mike Knowles. Brown and Connolly have been event champions at Gateway in the past, Courtney Force, Savoie and Knowles are first time event champions. Although the event was not sold-out this year, the satisfaction that fans walked away with, will certainly motivate ticket sales for next year’s event.
