Waterloo nursing home closing its doors

Canterbury Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at 718 N. Market St. in Waterloo will close its doors in August after having served the community's elderly population for more than 40 years.

An employee confirmed the closing on Friday, and said nursing home employees were notified of the decision on Tuesday afternoon. Attempts to reach officials from the nursing home's ownership group, Jamestown Management, were not successful as of this writing.

With a capacity to house more than 70 individuals, Canterbury Manor said it currently has 29 residents. A spring open house and picnic scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled.
ON THE LOOKOUT
Red Bud bank robbed at gunpoint

The North County News reported Thursday that Red Bud police have released pictures (above) and descriptions of two individuals involved in Wednesday's armed robbery of Chester National Bank in Red Bud.

The pictures were taken from security footage at Buena Vista National Bank in Evansville when the suspects were at that bank around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The pair also visited North County Savings Bank in Ruma at approximately 10 a.m. Neither of those banks were robbed.

The pair then robbed the Red Bud bank at gunpoint at approximately 11 a.m. No one was injured during the robbery.

Additional footage from all three banks is being processed in hopes of getting a better image of the suspects and their vehicle, the North County News reported. The suspects are African American males.

The lighter-skinned male is shorter, with a height estimated at between 5'5” and 5'10”. He also was reported to have a tattoo under/to the side of his right eye. It is a stacked tattoo, possibly a fraternity or gang symbol, consisting of a Roman numeral I on top of a circle, which is on top of another symbol that could not be made out. The darker-skinned male's height was estimated at between 5'11” and 6'2”.

There are mixed reports on the vehicle used in this crime. Police were initially looking for a blue Dodge Charger. This morning, they were looking for a “shiny” newer, dark-colored vehicle -- possibly a black Monte Carlo or blue Chrysler 300.

Originally, police stated the pair were both wearing red shirts. Police suspect they changed clothes between bank visits. Another possibility is there was a third individual involved, but only two African American males were seen. So far, police have obtained some evidence -- including clothing items and fingerprints.

Investigating the robbery are Red Bud police and the FBI. The Randolph County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Police assisted in the initial investigation.

If anyone has any information about the robbery, the suspects or their vehicle, they are urged to contact police.
DOWN THE DRAIN
Old Waterloo pool to become parking lot

Demolition began in earnest Wednesday on the old Sondag Memorial Pool in Waterloo, which now sits vacant next to the newly opened skate and bicycle park at 316 N. Library St.

The pool has been closed for the past two summers, as repeated attempts to pass voter referendums to fund mandated repairs were unsuccessful.

“It’s been vacant, and kids have been getting in there. The liability was also high because there was still water in it,” said Waterloo Park District Board member Shelby Mathes.

Mathes, who was instrumental in bringing the skate park to Waterloo, looked into the possibility of turning the old pool into a skate bowl. A representative of a nonprofit organization in the St. Louis area that does just that even came to assess the site. But he never followed through with a plan, Mathes said, and the park district’s insurance company finally commanded the demolition.

“Now it’s going to be a parking lot,” Mathes said.
