CHEERLEADERS WIN STATE!
Columbia cheerleaders take first in state

The Columbia High School cheerleading squad took first place in the small team division of the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading Championships held Saturday in Bloomington.

The CHS girls finished with a total score of 91.26 during their Saturday performance, besting second place Elmhurst (Timothy Christian) at 87.40.

Columbia dominated the entire tournament; they finished the Friday qualifying round also in first place.

With the win, the cheerleaders improved on last year's third place finish at state.

The team is coached by Robbie and Marla Walters.

THURSDAY DOG RESCUE IN HECKER
Neighbor rescues dog from icy lake

A 10-year-old German Shepherd is safe and back in his owners’ arms after getting trapped in an icy lake Thursday morning in rural Hecker. At around 8:25 a.m., Hecker Fire Department personnel responded to a call of a dog trapped in ice off Brand Lake Drive.

When firefighters arrived on scene approximately 20 minutes later, they found the dog, Chief, in a small boat with neighbor Scott Rice.

Dog owner Kim Blanchard said her dog apparently jumped into the 10-acre lake from their boat dock. Blanchard said she first called her husband at work, and he said to call Rice -- who was home from his job on the night shift.

Rice used the Blanchards' lakeside boat and a shovel to reach the dog.

Firefighters used another small boat to throw a rope to Rice, and were able to pull the two safely through the ice to shore.

PRIMARY ELECTION
Liefer edges Pittman; pool referendum fails

With all 37 precincts reporting, incumbent Monroe County Commissioner Terry Liefer narrowly defeated fellow Republican challenger Chuck Pittman by 48 votes in Tuesday's primary election. The vote total was 1,437 for Liefer to 1,389 for Pittman.

Monroe County Democrats have 75 days to caucus a candidate from their party to challenge Liefer in November for his county board seat.

The Waterloo Park District's attempt to keep the aging Sondag public pool facility alive failed Tuesday night by a 868-716 margin. The park district was seeking $575,000 in repairs for the pool to keep it open.

COLEMAN MURDER CASE
Statements from friend of Sheri Coleman revealed

Attorneys for the family of Sheri Coleman, who are seeking to include Joyce Meyer Ministries as a defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit against accused triple-murderer Chris Coleman, on Monday filed police statements made by a friend of hers who also works at the ministry.

The written statements, made by Kathy LaPlante of Fenton, Mo., paint a dark picture of the marriage between Sheri and Chris Coleman in the months prior to the May 5 murders of Sheri and sons Garett and Gavin.

"One day while at work, Sheri called me at 7 a.m. and she was again hysterically crying and said that if anything happened to her Chris did it," LaPlante wrote of a conversation between the two in February 2009.

In response to Monday's filing, attorneys for the ministry filed a motion to restrict plaintiff contact with its employees.

"On more than one occasion, the plaintiffs' counsel has contacted employees of Joyce Meyer Ministries without notice to Joyce Meyer Ministries' counsel," the Feb. 2 filing states.

The filing alleges that attorney Jack Carey, representing Sheri Coleman's family in the suit, wrote a letter to LaPlante "without knowledge or permission" from JMM's counsel.

"Communication by opposing counsel with employees of a party involved in a lawsuit is strictly forbidden by the rules of professional conduct," the filing claims.

A hearing on Tuesday's motion has been set for 10 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Monroe County Courthouse. Also set for hearing at that time is a motion to compel the deposition testimony of certain JMM employees, including Joyce Meyer.
