FOOTBALL FRENZY
Eagles send Bulldogs home with loss

The Columbia Eagles and Waterloo Bulldogs offenses attacked back and forth the entire first half.

One team finally got stopped and it was the Bulldogs. Columbia took a 28-21 lead into halftime and scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to earn the 41-21 win in a cool, damp night in Eagle territory.

Eagles quarterback Brian Winters threw five touchdown passes and ran the sixth and final touchdown in from the 21-yard line to seal Columbia's win over Monroe County rival Waterloo.

Bulldogs quarterback Tim Kassebaum ran for a touchdown and returned an interception to the end zone for two of Waterloo's three scores.

LEVEE REPAIRS TAX
County Board approves tax for levee repairs

In a controversial move, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners Tuesday morning voted unanimously in favor of a quarter-cent sales tax to fund area levee repairs. The new tax will go into effect Jan. 1, 2009.

The move came after a recommendation by the Monroe County Flood Prevention District to impose the tax last week.

The mayors of Columbia and Waterloo were both in attendance at Tuesday's county board meeting to express their views on the tax.
