WHS GRAD WINS U of I PRIZE
Naber wins $30,000 engineering award

Jonathan Naber, a 2007 graduate of Waterloo High School, was named one of four student inventors nationwide to win the $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Collegiate Student Prize on Wednesday.

He becomes the first undergraduate student to ever win the prize. Naber was selected as a finalist for the award at U of I earlier this year.

The Lemelson-MIT Program is awarded annually at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, California Institute of Technology and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Naber, a junior at U of I, won for developing an affordable prosthetic arm to serve populations in underdeveloped countries. He is the son of Tom and Connie Naber of Waterloo.

"My dream is that one day, every person around the world will have two functional arms, and I truly believe that my low-cost prosthetic arm is going to play a major role in that change," Naber said in a university news release.

Naber plans to travel to Guatemala this summer to field-test a prototype arm at a prosthetics clinic. During his senior year, he's aiming to patent the concept and put together a business plan for a production facility in Africa.

The facility would supply prosthetic arms to amputee populations in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

For more on Naber's accomplishment, read the March 10 print edition of the Republic-Times.

CALL OF THE WILD
Bobcat sighting Saturday in Columbia

Charlotte Hoock of Columbia snapped a photo of this bobcat seen roaming along Palmer Road near Route 3 in Columbia around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Hoock said she was driving with her brother, Kenny Schmidt of Maeystown, on Palmer Road when they spotted the animal.

There have been a handful of documented reports of bobcats seen roaming that stretch of Columbia near the bluffs, but this is one of the clearer captured images of the animal.

“Luckily I had my camera,” she said. “It was really big.”

POWER OUTAGE
Car slams into light pole on Market Street

A Corvette driven by Gary Pace was heading north on Market Street in Waterloo around 10 p.m. Saturday night, when he said he was cut off by a driver turning off of Mill Street, causing him to collide with a light pole.

Waterloo police and fire personnel responded to the scene, as power lines were down and electricity was knocked out for a few city blocks.

Police said no injuries were reported in the crash.

No tickets were issued in the accident, and city crews were able to restore power to the homes affected in the incident.
