| COUNTY FOOTBALL SHOWDOWN |
Waterloo tops Columbia in thriller
The Waterloo Bulldogs overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit to topple the rival Columbia Eagles 21-14 in a showdown of Monroe County schools on Friday night.
The 'Dogs scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes to come out on top in front of a massive crowd at Columbia High School.
Waterloo's offense was out of sync most of the night, and their defense had a hard time containing Mark Sellers. The CHS rusher gained 181 yards on the night.
But Waterloo fullback Zach Laidley continued his hot start to the season, wearing down the Eagles for three touchdowns to lead his team to their second victory.
Last year at WHS, the Bulldogs scored 10 fourth quarter points to defeat the Eagles, 24-17.

Dogs die in East Carondelet house fire
A fire that destroyed a home Monday afternoon near East Carondelet resulted in the death of 13 dogs.
Two juvenile boys, ages 12 and 13, are in custody following the fire, which police believe they started.
St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Capt. Steve Johnson said the boys had stolen a red Dodge Charger earlier that day and were driving toward a relative's house in the area when they ran out of gas.
"They then went into a shed and knocked over a motorcycle, apparently looking for gas," he said. "They found some flares and decided to light them. They managed to set the shed on fire and also the house."
The fire began around 2 p.m. to the home of Rhonda Tutor on Chartrand Road northeast of East Carondelet. The Prairie du Pont Fire Department fought the fire with assistance from neighboring departments. A Dupo firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated at a local hospital.
A fund to help Tutor recover from the fire has been established at the First Bank in Columbia.
The juveniles are currently detained at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center. |
