A 37-year-old Missouri man was rushed to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of serious injuries and burns after his motorcycle crashed into the rear of a party bus and caught on fire just east of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge on eastbound Interstate 255 near Columbia shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday.

Columbia police, fire and EMS personnel were assisted by Mehlville, Mo. fire and EMS, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and Monroe County EMS, and Illinois State Police at the scene. All three eastbound lanes of I-255 were closed as crews tended to the accident.

The driver and passenger of a Lincoln MKX crossover SUV told the Republic-Times at the scene that they were in the far left lane of I-255 when the motorcycle passed by them in the center lane at an “extremely high rate of speed” and collided with the back end of a Ford F550 party bus driven by an 82-year-old man from Florissant, Mo.

The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time of the crash.

The eastbound lanes of I-255 near the bridge were reopened to traffic by noon. No other injuries were reported.

The motorcyclist was identified Monday by ISP as Christopher T. Mueller, 37, of St. Louis. He was riding an Augusta F4 1000R, and was taken to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis. Mueller, who was wearing a helmet, has citations pending for driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
