Lightning causes house fire in Millstadt

Columbia Fire Department personnel assisted Millstadt with a structure fire that occurred after lightning struck a chimney on a home at 300 E. Laurel Street in Millstadt late Tuesday night shortly before midnight.

Millstadt Fire Chief Kurt Pellman said the male homeowner was returning home from work when he observed smoke coming from the rear of his residence and called the fire department.

The back exterior of the home received some fire damage, and the force of the lightning strike split the chimney in half. Otherwise, Pellman said, heavy fire damage was avoided, with the home mostly receiving smoke and water damage. Firemen remained on scene for about two hours.

The Waterloo Fire Department was dispatched to a couple of storm-related calls on Tuesday night, but none of them turned into anything of serious nature.
