Waterloo cross country runner Josh Rodenberg is this week’s Republic-Times Athlete of the Week.

On Saturday, Rodenberg continued his strong senior season, winning Triad’s Class 2A Regional with his first-place finish and time of 15:41.

Rodenberg beat Mascoutah sophomore Chris Martin (15:52) and junior Murphy Affolder (15:56), who finished in second and third place, respectively.

Two weeks ago, Martin beat Rodenberg by 11 seconds at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet.

“(Josh’s) goal is always the same (when he races them),” Huffman said. “He wants to  get behind both of Martin and Affolder at the beginning of the race. At the 2 to 2.5 mile marker, Josh tries to pass. If Josh keeps up his current pace, he is going to finish really strong at state.”

Rodenberg’s first place finish helped advance the Bulldogs team on to Sectionals as well. The Waterloo boys cross country team finished fourth at the Triad Regional in Troy. This Saturday, Rodenberg and the Bulldogs will compete in the Decatur MacArthur Sectional.
