| HOUSE FIRE IN COLUMBIA | |
| Home damaged in Monday blaze
A lighted upstairs Christmas tree may be to blame for a fire that damaged the home of Gail Morrow at 421 N. Kaempfe Street in Columbia around 5 p.m. Monday.
Columbia firemen battled the flames and smoke to keep the fire contained to the home's interior. No injuries were reported in the blaze, although the family was not sure if its cat survived.
"She just walked upstairs and the tree was on fire," Gail's mother, who lives next door at 429 N. Kaempfe, said of her daughter at the scene.

| NEW COUNTY BOARD CHAIRMAN NAMED | |
| Wittenauer named Monroe County Board Chairman
Democrat county commissioner Delbert Wittenauer was named chairman of the Monroe County Board during its meeting held Monday morning.
He replaces outgoing chairman Dale Haudrich, who was defeated by Democrat Mike Kovarik in the November election.
"It's quite an honor," Wittenauer said Monday. "I take it very seriously and I'll try my very best to fulfill my responsibility."

| ACCIDENT NEAR HECKER | |
| Man seriously hurt in Friday crash
Roy A. Stahl, 33, of Waterloo was airlifted to an area hospital for serious injuries suffered in a one-vehicle rollover crash Friday morning near Hecker.
The rollover occurred around 5:25 a.m. Friday on J Road just south of Route 156, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said.
