Hunter falls out of deer stand near Kaskaskia River

Emergency responders in St. Clair County are working to rescue a 75-year-old hunter who apparently fell out of a deer stand shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday in very dense woods near Pike Sawmill Road — not far from the Kaskaskia River.

New Athens and Smithton fire department personnel were still working to rescue the man as of 11 a.m. Smithton responders supplied a rescue boat in an attempt to reach the man by river, according to emergency radio dispatch. The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

UPDATE: The injured hunter was rescued shortly after 11 a.m. and transported to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
