The third time proved to be the charm for the Alton-Marquette Explorers.

Beaten twice by Gibault during the regular season, Marquette defeated Gibault, 3-2, in an overtime thriller Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 1A Columbia Soccer Sectional.

Marquette’s Nick Korte broke a 2-all tie 10 minutes into overtime and held on for the win. Korte recorded a hat trick on the night.

The win advances Marquette (16-6-1) into the sectional title game on Saturday at 11 a.m., where it will take on Central (12-3-2). The Cougars defeated Mater Dei 1-0 in the other semifinal Wednesday.

Gibault, which got a pair of goals from Andrew Reinholz, ends its season at 15-5-3.

The Hawks, who defeated Marquette 1-0 and 2-1 during the season, were forced to fight from behind all night.

“Our boys fought back, over and over we fought back,” Gibault coach Matt Reeb said. “It’s a shame though to give away goals that shouldn’t be goals. It’s a shame to get one of the worst PK calls I have ever seen. I’m beyond words, speechless.”

“How you can give¬† away a sectional game? Bringing down Central Illinois refs to ref a Southern Illinois game is absurd. Put us behind the 8-ball consistently. That killed us.”

Gibault also missed converting on a number of good scoring opportunities.

Marquette led 1-0 at halftime and 2-1 midway through the second half, before Reinholz sent the game into overtime with his second goal of the game with 11 minutes to play in regulation.
