Hawks edge ‘Dogs; Eagles clip Hawks in rivalry soccer action

The local high school soccer season got off to a blazing start this as cross-town rivals Gibault and Waterloo met Monday night and Gibault and Columbia renewed their storied rivalry Wednesday night.

Playing its first game under new head coach Darryn Haudrich for the first time in Class 2A after being bumped up due a third place Class 1A state finish in 2016, the Hawks seemed to pick up right where they left off.

Gibault junior Karson Huels scored about seven minutes in on a breakaway, and the Hawks defense was able to make it hold up in a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs at Waterloo High School.

Huels scored eight goals with 14 assists last season and will be looked upon for more offense this fall.

The Hawks applied consistent pressure in the offensive zone all game, but Waterloo goalkeeper Sam Ward made several strong saves to keep the game close.

The Hawks played Springfield in the Metro Cup at Columbia High School on Tuesday, winning 3-2 on goals from Huels, Logan Doerr and John Adams.

The Eagles opened their season with a 1-0 win over Althoff on Monday. Sam Spivey scored the game’s only goal for Columbia.

On Tuesday, Waterloo dropped to 0-2 with a 1-0 loss to Belleville East. The Bulldogs play in the Carbondale tournament over the weekend.

Wednesday night, the Hawks dropped a 3-0 contest to Columbia in Metro Cup action at CHS. Riley Hubler scored all three goals for the Eagles, with assists from Cameron Eden and Alex Barton.
