The Gibault High School cross country team ran in the heat of the Marissa Invitational on Tuesday.

“Yikes, it was really hot. We had a runner who didn’t finish the race because she thought she was overheating,” said Gibault coach Heather Johnson. “So, we didn’t have a full girls team compete.”

Despite not being able to place as a team and the excessive heat, the Hawks had two top 10 finishers. Gibault’s Nathan Schmidt finished third overall as the Hawks’ top finisher. For the girls team, Hannah O’Neill came in sixth and Leah Sueme finished in 13th place.

“The team ran great despite the heat,” said Johnson.

Gibault’s next meet is Sept. 8 at Belleville West. Gibault will not be running, once again, with a full team, according to coach Johnson, due to several of the runners taking the ACT.
