The graduation of 11 seniors and the return of the only two letter winners for the Gibault High School boy’s golf team can only mean one thing.

It is going to be an interesting year for the Hawks.

Scott Ruppel has only two players back from last year’s senior-loaded team.

The coach is only returning sophomore Sam Range, who advanced to state a year ago, and senior Ethan Kipping.

Junior Nick McBride has also rejoined the team.

McBride had earlier played golf during his freshman year at Gibault, but he did not come out last fall.

This fall, McBride is expected to be Gibault’s No. 3 player.

“He has gotten a lot stronger since his freshman year,” Ruppel said.

After that, Gibault’s line up is pretty open.

Austin Doerr, Jason Mertz and Collin Kruse are expected to round out the Hawks’ roster.

“It’s going to be a challenge this year,” Ruppel said.

With all of that being said, the coach is really excited about Range, who is hitting the ball 30 to 40 yards farther than he did last year.

“Sam is every coach’s dream,” Ruppel said.
