The Gibault Catholic High School cross country team is off to a steady start to its fall season.

Coach Heather Johnson predicts the season’s early successes will pick up the pace as the fall goes on.

“We have two meets under our belt,” said Johnson. “Somewhat smaller turn out this year, but we are practicing really hard so we have a successful season. I expect great things from this team.”

Johnson’s hawks competed in one of its largest contests of the year on Saturday at the Metro East Lutheran Invitational, which had over 50 schools competing.

Gibault had two runners medal, with the top 75 runners receiving awards in the race.

Sarah Kuester came in 65th and Nathan Schmidt, the hawks only male runner, finished 46th overall with a time of 19:24.

“This is a great start for the runners,” said Johnson. “This course is challenging, lots of hills. It was hot and 3.1 miles in length.”

The Lady Hawks placed 3rd in their first meet at the New Athens Invitational on Aug. 21, with four of its seven girls finishing in the top 20. Hanah O’Neill was the top medalist for Gibault, coming in 6th. Sarah Kuester placed 10th, Leah Sueme in 13th, and Molly Diehl in 20th.
