George S. Mentel Jr.

George S. Mentel Jr., 85, of Valmeyer, died June 8, 2014 in Waterloo.

He was born April 10, 1929 in Valmeyer, son of the late George and Emma (nee Diewald) Mentel Sr.

He was a member of St. Mary Church in Valmeyer, Valmeyer American Legion Post 901 (60 years), U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict (stationed in Germany, 1951-53) and Valmeyer Postmaster (30-plus years).

He is survived by children Stephen W. Mentel, Marshon M. (David) Donley, Sue E. (John) Wasner; grandchildren Trevor Wolfe and Tiara Wasner (Nick Meyer); sister Dorothy (William) Rick; brother Gene Mentel; sister-in-law Sylvia Mentel, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lila Mae Mentel (nee Wild), brother Robert Mentel and sister-in-law Norma Mentel.

Visitation will take place 4 to 8 p.m. June 12 and 8 to 9:15 a.m. June 13 at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo.

A funeral Mass will take place at noon on June 13 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer.

Interment will follow at Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Waterloo.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Church in Valmeyer or Valmeyer American Legion Post 901.
