Fundraiser combines patriotism, school pride

Ice cream sales, a pizza night, car washes — the Waterloo Band Parents Organization won’t stop until they exhaust every fundraising opportunity available to support the high school band.

Their newest idea is a flag fundraiser involving U.S. patriotic holidays. Beginning in April, Waterloo residents could purchase an American flag to display in their front yard for these major holidays.

“With Waterloo being such a tight-knit community and very pro-veteran, I thought this would be perfect,” said flag fundraiser chair Christine Kramer. “I think it will be nice to see as many flags as we can, lining the homes of Waterloo, showing our patriotic pride and support.”

A one-year subscription is $40 and includes a flag for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Patriot Day, Veterans Day and Presidents Day.

Interested parties should place their order at least two weeks before the holiday to ensure availability, and subscriptions are prorated for orders placed after Memorial Day.

WHS band members and parents will install a three-foot-by-five-foot U.S. flag on a pole in subscribers’ yards at least one day before the holiday and remove the flag after the holiday.

“I like helping out and watching the students take pride in knowing that if you want to be successful, you have to work at it,” Kramer said.

Flags will be placed within three feet of the corner created by the driveway and sidewalk.

Etiquette established in the U.S. flag code dictates that residents should not leave their flag out in the dark or in rain. Residents are responsible for illuminating their flag if left out at night.

Funds raised from the flag subscriptions will go to the WBPO general fund, earmarked for new band uniforms and other band expenses.

In addition to the flag subscription, the WBPO organizes a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. Kramer said the top fundraiser is the mouse races event which took place in January and earned the organization $4,100 in profit.

The event included a dinner, silent auction, mouse racing and a 50/50 raffle. WBPO used half of the proceeds to make a payment on the WHS band truck.

Accordingly, the truck goes with the band to their competitions and is used to haul the band’s uniforms.

Another recent fundraiser, Papa Vito’s Night, raised $940 for a trip for band members whose parents or family members helped with the event.

The money will help these band members pay their way to Orlando, Fla., so they can march in the Disney World parade in the summer of 2017.

Overall, the cost for one band member to fully fund the trip is $1,138. Students receive more money for their trip depending on how many fundraisers they help out in.

“(Band parents) thank all the residents for their continued support with all of our fundraisers,” Kramer said. “Their support helps keep us the best band in the land.”

Contact Kramer at 314-276-6631 to place an order for a flag subscription.

“Not only will this fundraiser give our band the opportunity to raise money, it will give the community an opportunity to show their support and national pride,” Kramer said.
