Ecology of the Oak-Hickory Forest | Clifftop

May 12, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Clifftop presents an “Ecology of the Oak-Hickory Forest” field trip Saturday, May 12, from 1-3 p.m. at the White Rock Nature Preserve, 6438 Bluff Road, Valmeyer.

Residents of Illinois have always been dependent on its forests and trees for economic viability and environmental stability. Forests provide a multitude of ecosystem services including clean air, soil and water quality, and wildlife habitat and nourishment.

The field trip will be led by Mark Brown, Illinois Department of Natural Resources District Forester. Brown will discuss the Oak-Hickory Forest of White Rock and the trees that are found there.

He will also talk about management techniques that will help keep the Oak-Hickory forest healthy and productive such as prescribed burning, exotic plant control and stand manipulation.

Attendees are asked to assemble at the White Rock Nature Preserve parking lot. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and comfortable attire, as some hiking will be required.

This event is free and open to the public. Attendance will  be limited to 30, so make reservations by calling 935-2542 or emailing cliffmbr@htc.net by May 10.
