The Columbia High School volleyball team has kept its fans on their toes all season. Thursday night was no exception.

The Eagles traveled to Breese Central, defeating their conference nemesis for the second time this season and for the first and second time in several years, 25-23 and 25-12.

“The first game was extremely close and we were able to pull out a win,” Columbia volleyball coach Kelly Landgraf said. “I credit that to having 8 seniors that handle pressure situations very well.”

Coach Landgraf attributed the Eagles success on Thursday night to the team’s strong passing game and solid hitting attack, which started off slow according to Landgraf, but picked up as the match went on.

“Last night was a great accomplishment for not only the varsity team but the program.  I was very anxious to get to Central and see how we played on their home court,” Landgraf explained.

The Eagles served up a strong game on Central’s turf, with a team effort of five aces and 26 total serving points, eight of which came from senior Savannah Wittenbrink who also led the team with nine kills. Megan Huffman and Calli Germain had an impressive showing combing for the team’s total of 31 assists.

“The girls were very excited to beat Central for the second time this year but they continue to stay focused on each and every game,” Landgraf added.

The Eagles have five more games left to play in the regular season, traveling to Red Bud on Tuesday and Collinsville the following Monday. Columbia will then be at home for the rest of the season.
