The Columbia Police Department announced Thursday that warrants have been issued for three Missouri men on one count of residential burglary and two counts of attempted residential burglary following incidents that occurred on Wednesday.

The three men have been identified as Derek S. Ewald, 20, and Ryan J. Ewald, 35, both of St. Charles, Mo., and Joseph S. Garcia, 39, of St. Louis. Bond for Garcia and Ryan Ewald was set at $100,000. Bond for Derek Ewald was set at $25,000.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Columbia police responded to a report of two suspects attempting to break into the back door of an occupied residence in the 800 block of Meadowview Lane. Once officers arrived, Ryan Ewald and Joseph Garcia were taken into custody. Derek Ewald fled the scene in a gray Mazda car with Missouri plates, but was stopped a short distance from the home and taken into custody. Members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police and Cahokia Police Department also responded to assist.

Further investigation revealed that the apprehended suspects had previously attempted to break into a residence in the 1000 block of Bradington Court in Columbia. All three are in custody at the Monroe County Jail.

The CPD continues to investigate this matter to see if the suspects have any connection with residential burglaries that occurred on Brookfield Court and Brellinger earlier this month.

“We would like to thank the residents who called the Columbia Police Department yesterday to report pertinent information identifying the suspects and the vehicle they were driving,” Columbia Police Chief Joe Edwards said. “Without the assistance of concerned citizens, the suspects may have been able to escape arrest.”
