Columbia, Gibault, Valmeyer volleyball teams open season with wins

The Columbia, Gibault and Valmeyer High School volleyball teams were victorious Thursday night.

Columbia remains perfect

Columbia (2-0) pounded Metro-East Lutheran, 25-14, 25-190.

Savannah Wittenbrink (eight kills) and Erika Varel (six kills) combined for 14 of Columbia’s 22 kills. Calli Germain (11 assists) and Megan Huffman (10 assists) combined for 21 of Columbia’s 22 assists.

Columbia (2-0) opened their season with a 25-12, 25-5 win over Marissa on Aug. 21. Wittenbrink and Varel had big nights for the Eagles. Wittenbrink had 10 kills and six blocks. Varel had six kills and three blocks.

Columbia plays at Waterloo Thursday.

Gibault improves to 3-0

The Gibault Hawks (3-0) remain undefeated.

On Thursday night, Heather Ebert’s bunch beat Wesclin, 25- 16, 25-11 in Waterloo.

Gibault’s Courtney Louveau and Brittany Laurent combined for 17 assists in the Hawks latest win. Missy Kimlinger had four kills. Courtney Schutt, Katy Gyore and Laurent chipped in with three kills apiece. Gyore also had four blocks.

Red Bud took Gibault to three games on Aug. 22. But Gibault bounced back and won the final two deciding games, 25-18 and 25-15.

Red Bud (0-1) opened the match, winning the first game, 25-18. Louveau (14 assists) and Laurent (12 assists) had another big match for the Hawks.

Kimlinger (nine kills), Schutt (seven kills) and Louveau (five kills) also combined for 17 of Gibault’s 27 kills. Gyore had six blocks.

Gibault opened their season Aug. 20, sweeping Alton-Marquette, 2-0, in Alton. Gibault beat AM, 25-10 and 25-10. Louveau led the Hawks with 17 assists, while Laurent chipped in with nine more. Schutt led Gibault with six kills. Lauren Goldschmidt, Kimlinger and Gyore had five kills apiece.

Valmeyer sweeps Alton-Marquette

Valmeyer (1-0) beat Alton-Marquette, 25-14, 25-19.

Miranda Kaufmann had a big night for Pirates, recording 19 assists. Andi Inman had seven kills, five aces and scored a team-high nine points. Tiffani Brewer had five kills. Paige Whipple had another big match for the Pirates, recording nine kills and six blocks.

Valmeyer plays at Chester Monday.

Waterloo seeks first win

Waterloo (0-2) lost to O’Fallon, 25-13, 25-21.

Angie Crawford’s bunch opened the season with a 25-9, 25-18 loss to Freeburg on Aug. 20.

Lisa Liefer had four kills for the Bulldogs in the loss. Kelsey Hamman recorded all five of Waterloo’s assists.

Dupo beats Madison

Dupo picked up their first win of the young season Saturday, beating Madison 20-25, 27-25, 25-12.

Dupo (1-2) plays at Lebanon

Thursday.
