The Columbia boys and girls cross country teams are looking strong early.

The girls team will consist of one freshman and nine sophomores including Lauren Kaempfe, who qualified for state during her freshman year.

Sophomore Racheal Schroeder, who got hurt last year, is also returning.

Columbia coach Ernie Kopp said the boys team will have a little more depth than in recent years.

“I think they are very determined and are expecting to succeed,” he said.

The boys are returning Ian Boyer-Edwards, who is expected to lead the team.

“I’m really impressed how much he has improved over the past year,” Kopp said.

Sean McCarty is also returning. Earlier this spring, McCarty, who is a senior, competed on the Columbia track earlier this spring with senior Ryan McManus.
