Storage shed destroyed by fire in Columbia

The Columbia Fire Department responded about 6:45 p.m. Saturday to a small storage shed on fire behind a residence in the 500 block of West Bottom Avenue between Walnut and Young streets. The shed was a total loss, and the rear of the home sustained vinyl siding damage from the heat of the flames.

Columbia Assistant Fire Chief Jim Broshears said the cause of the fire may be electrical in nature. The occupants of the home were inside the residence when the fire occurred and called 911, he said.

The approximately 10-foot-by-10-foot shed, which stood about 15 feet from the back of the home, was fully engulfed in flames upon firefighter arrival.

“We had a good knockdown,” Broshears said. “We got there pretty quickly.”

Bottom Avenue was closed in the area of the fire until about 7:15 p.m. No injuries were reported in the incident.
