Carbondale walks over the Bulldogs

Carbondale running back Bryce Reno-Gibson showed Saturday why he’s one of the most versatile players in Southern Illinois. Gibson scored three touchdowns, leading Carbondale to a 34-17 win over the Waterloo Bulldogs. Carbondale (3-0) also got two touchdowns from Michel Andre.

Waterloo coach Dan Rose said it was a “terrible game.”

“We just couldn’t stop their big plays,” he said. “If we are able to contain them, it’s a manageable game.”

Rose said his bunch had a hard time getting into any rhythm. They also had a hard time containing Gibson. “He’s a special athlete,” Rose said. “You have to contain him perfectly or he will do what he did tonight.”

Waterloo (2-1)  took an early 3-0 lead when Ryan Aycock made a 30-yard field goal 90 seconds into the game. But Gibson scored on a 46-yard run with 6:19 to play in the first quarter.

Two minutes later, Shamarc Bursey scored on a a 60-yard pass from Jake Hoffmann, giving the Terriers a 14-3 lead. He later scored on a 20-yard pass in the fourth quarter.

Clayton Bourgeois trimmed Carbondale’s lead to 14-10 with his 26-yard touchdown reception late in the first half.

Gibson later put Carbondale back up by two touchdowns with his 89-yard kickoff return to begin the third quarter.
