Benyo, Morris join Gibault Hall of Fame

The Gibault Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame added two new members last Tuesday night.

Former tennis standout Joe Benyo (Class of 1978) and softball great Emily Morris (Class of 2010) joined an elite class of Gibault athletic stars.

Benyo was a member of the inaugural tennis team at Gibault, and served as the No. 1 singles player all four years. He earned first team All-Area recognition in the Belleville News-Democrat for three years and qualified for the state tournament during his senior year.

Benyo compiled a career tennis record of 63-17 at Gibault. He was also a multi-sport athlete with 12 total varsity letters earned at the school.

Benyo went on to play collegiately at Eastern Illinois University, where he finished second in the Mid-Continent Conference Tennis Tournament during his freshman year.

Morris had a remarkable softball career at Gibault that she furthered at the University of Evansville.
For the Hawks, Morris pitched 387 total innings, recording 433 strikeouts with a career ERA of 2.02. She won 40 career games at Gibault, 20 of which came during her senior season.

She was the team MVP for the Hawks in 2010 and also won the Sister Mary Bernard Braun award.
Morris posted a .310 career batting average at Gibault with 66 singles, 19 doubles, nine triples, four home runs and 47 RBI. She was part of three regional championship softball teams at Gibault.

At Evansville, Morris posted a career batting mark of .315 and led the team in hitting during her junior season (.429).

She made 70 career pitching appearances with 186 innings pitched and 101 strikeouts.

Morris was named an All-America Scholar Athlete, was on the Dean’s List and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Evansville.
