First Baptist Church in Waterloo recently closed on its purchase of the vacant Canterbury Nursing Home at 718 North Market Street, with plans to use the building for church-related functions and services in the near future.

The nursing home, which is located next to the church property on Covington Drive, ceased operations earlier this year.

“When our neighbors, Canterbury Manor Nursing Home, became available on the real estate market, there was an enormous interest by (church) leaders and members to investigate this purchase option,” First Baptist Church building committee member Lisa Dean told the Republic-Times on Wednesday.

Waterloo Mayor Tom Smith expressed support for the purchase.

“That’s good. It means no big vacant building there,” he said.
