The Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic School baseball team, along with the Waterloo and Valmeyer junior high baseball teams and Dupo Junior High School softball team, are headed to state tournament play on Saturday, each in their respected classes.

The Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic School baseball team (14-1) is fresh off its 13-2 SIJHSA regional championship win against St. Paul of Highland.

Led by coach Jim Helfrich, SPPCS’ Trevor Davis took the mound for the Falcons in the regional game and led St. Paul, 3-0, in the bottom of the third inning. The Falcons then pulled away in the fourth, scoring six more runs.

SPPCS travels to Coulterville on Saturday to face Dodds Elementary in the first round of the state tourney. If the Falcons win, they play again next Wednesday and Friday.

The Valmeyer Junior High School baseball team won its regional on Friday, defeating Red Bud, 7-6. The Pirates won the game in the bottom of the seventh in thrilling fashion with a hit up the left field line by Tyler Kempfer to win the game. Michael Chism was the Pirates’ starting pitcher, with Drake Hicks in relief.

Valmeyer will play Breese on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Pinckneyville. If the Pirates win, they will play Tuesday and Thursday next week.

The Dupo Junior High School softball team defeated Waterloo on Monday in the regional tournament, 7-3. The Tigers’ Megan Brown pitched in her second regional championship in a row. Dupo went to state last year as well, but lost in the first round.

Dupo will take on Highland in Centralia at 2 p.m. on Saturday. If the Tigers win, they will play Tuesday and Thursday next week.
