Anhydrous ammonia spill in rural Waterloo

The Waterloo Fire Department responded along with Millstadt EMS to an anhydrous ammonia leak reported in the area of Bohleysville Road at Keim Road in St. Clair County about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The anhydrous tank hitch came loose from a trailer pulled by a tractor operated by Steve Frank on the Vogel farm, resulting in a broken hose that led to the spill. There was a significant amount of the chemical spilled and a large anhydrous cloud hovering above the area, according to emergency radio dispatch.

There were no reports of injuries, but a couple of homes near the spill were evacuated as a precaution. Monroe County Sheriff’s Department deputies assisted with the incident.
