The Republic-Times Athlete of the Week is Alex Schmidt, pictured with wife Jessica, who participated in the Show Me State Games held in Columbia, Mo., on July 19. He competed in the heavyweight division of the bench press competition and won first place with a lift of 420 pounds.

Schmidt is a Waterloo native and graduate of Waterloo High School who currently resides in Red Bud.
